“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us…He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus…” Galatians 3:13-14 (NIV)
God promised Abraham that the whole world would be blessed through his descendants (Genesis 12:3).
Jesus came in human form to fulfil God’s promise to Abraham. His redemption was not just for Israel but for the entire world. This redemption is through the blood of Jesus that was shed and the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that He lavished on us.
The word ‘redemption’ is about paying a price to purchase something or to pay a ransom. The price for our redemption was paid with the Saviour’s (Jesus) very life. It is also important to recognise that because of this payment, we also have forgiveness of sins. This is part of our redemption.
Friends, sin leads to bondage and death. We need to be redeemed from the penalty of our sins, and that’s part of what Jesus bought with His blood. Not only could we be forgiven for our sins, but we could be brought back from the penalties, such as life in purgatory.
God’s redemption wasn’t offered because we deserve it. It was His love and mercy that drove Him to rescue us. He freed us from our bondage to the law and the enemy and allowed us to walk in a new freedom in Him. Amen.
